Swing Gate Opener Guide: Types, Size Limits and What to Check

A swing gate opener is a motor that pushes and pulls a hinged gate open and closed. The right one depends on four things: how long each gate leaf is, how much it weighs, how much room you have at the pillars, and how often the gate is used. Get those four right and the rest is detail.

This beginner’s guide explains the main types, how to read a size rating, what the store’s current models say about their limits, and which safety parts the system needs. It is written for UAE villa and small building owners who want to understand the choice before they speak to a technician.

What a Swing Gate Opener Does

A swing gate has one or two leaves on hinges. The opener attaches to the leaf and to a pillar or post, then moves the leaf through an arc, usually 90 degrees. A control board runs the motor, reads the remote control and listens to the safety devices.

Most homes use a pair of openers, one per leaf, with a single control board. A single leaf gate needs just one motor.

Swing gates need open space to move through. That is the first question to settle, because a gate that cannot open fully will never suit a swing opener, however good the motor is.

Types of Swing Gate Opener

Most swing gate openers fall into three groups. The names vary between brands, so treat these as general categories and check the manual for the exact model.

Arm Openers Mounted on the Pillar

An articulated or folding arm sits on the pillar and pushes the leaf with a jointed arm. It suits gates that open inward or outward and needs reasonable room around the pillar. The arm folds when the gate is closed.

Linear Openers

A linear opener uses a screw or ram that extends and retracts in a straight line. It is a common choice for residential gates and needs space for the body of the motor and the mounting brackets. Models such as the MOTORLINE LINCE are listed on the store in 300 mm, 400 mm and 600 mm lengths.

Underground Openers

An underground opener sits in a box below the gate and keeps the pillar area clear. It is chosen mainly for appearance, but it needs good drainage and proper civil work, which matters where driveways are washed down. Ask a technician whether it suits your gate and ground conditions.

How to Read Size and Weight Limits

Every manufacturer rates a swing gate opener by the length and weight of each leaf. The word to watch is “per leaf”. A pair of openers rated at 250 kg per leaf does not suit a single leaf weighing 400 kg.

Do not choose a motor that sits right at the limit. Wind, a slight lean in the pillar or a stiff hinge all add load. Leave a clear margin and ask a technician to check the gate by hand first. A leaf that is hard to push will wear any motor out early.

Solid sheet gates catch more wind than open bar gates of the same size. That is general installer knowledge, not a rating printed on a data sheet, but it is worth remembering in an exposed UAE location.

Swing Gate Opener Models and Their Stated Limits

The table below uses only figures from each product’s own page on the store. They are manufacturer claims, and you should confirm them against the data sheet before buying.

Model Stated gate limits Other listed details
CAME AXL 2M Up to 2 m and 250 kg per leaf Encoder control, IP54, 15 seconds to open 90 degrees
BFT ATHOS AC A40 Up to 4 m and 400 kg Irreversible operator, 16 seconds to open 90 degrees
SOMMER TWIST 200 Gates up to 300 kg 2000 N pulling force, IP44, radio receiver included
SOMFY IXENGO Up to 4 m and 1000 kg per leaf 230V RTS kit with control unit and remotes

What This Means for You

Notice that two models can share a length limit and differ a lot in weight. The BFT and the SOMFY both list 4 m, but their weight ratings are far apart. So length alone never tells you enough.

Also notice that a high rating does not make a motor better for a light gate. Match the motor to the real leaf, then add a margin.

Power Supply: Mains or Low Voltage

Swing gate openers run either on mains voltage or on low voltage, often 24V, supplied by a transformer or a battery. Low voltage systems are common where a battery backup or solar panel is planned, because they can keep running through a power cut.

The store lists the MOTORLINE LINCE in 230V, 110V and 24V versions, so check the voltage before you order. Do not mix voltages between the motor and the control board.

Whatever the voltage, the supply cable and any mains connection should be installed by a qualified technician.

Duty Cycle: How Often the Gate Moves

Duty cycle describes how much a motor can work before it needs to rest. A family gate that opens a dozen times a day is a light load. A gate shared by many flats, with traffic through the day, is a heavier one.

Data sheets usually state a duty cycle or a maximum number of cycles per hour. If the product page does not list one, ask before you buy. A motor built for light use on a busy entrance is a common reason for early failures.

Heat adds to the problem. A motor that runs hot in a UAE summer needs more rest than the same motor in a cool garage, so keep a margin here as well.

Weather Rating and Heat

The IP number on a motor tells you how well it is sealed against dust and water. In the table, the CAME AXL 2M lists IP54 and the SOMMER TWIST 200 lists IP44. The first digit covers solid objects and dust and the second covers water, so a higher number generally means better protection.

The CAME AXL 2M page also lists an operating temperature range of minus 20 to plus 55 degrees Celsius. UAE summer heat can push a closed motor housing well above air temperature, so ask whether the range suits an open, sunny pillar.

Safety Devices You Need With a Swing Gate Opener

A swing gate opener is only one part of a safe system. A swing gate can trap a person or a car against a pillar or wall, so protection matters.

  • Photocells detect an obstacle in the path and stop or reverse the gate. See the photocell sensors category for options.
  • A flashing light warns people that the gate is about to move.
  • A manual release lets you move the gate by hand during a power cut. The CAME AMICO page, for example, lists a trilobe key release.
  • Force and limit settings make sure the gate stops when it meets resistance. Test them after every adjustment.

The European standard EN 12978 covers sensitive protective devices for powered gates. The Swedish Standards Institute listing describes its scope as the design, construction and testing of such devices, and shows a 2024 edition replacing the 2009 one.

Never bypass or disable a safety device. Isolate the mains before opening the control board, and leave wiring and structural work to a qualified technician. Keep children and pets clear of a moving gate.

When a Swing Gate Is Not the Right Choice

A swing opener is a poor fit when the driveway slopes sharply into the gate, when the leaves cannot open fully, or when the gate is very long and heavy. In those cases a sliding gate may suit better. The guide on how to choose a sliding gate motor covers that side of the decision.

Also check the pillars. Weak or cracked pillars cannot carry the load of a motor pulling a heavy leaf, and no opener can fix that.

Questions People Ask

Can one opener run a double gate?

No. A double swing gate normally uses one opener per leaf, linked to one control board. Some kits include two motors for this reason.

Can I add phone control later?

Often yes, if the control board accepts a GSM or similar module, but you must check the board manual. See the GSM gate opener guide for how that works.

Does the gate keep working in a power cut?

Only with a battery backup or a solar supply, and you should confirm that with the product page. Otherwise use the manual release to move the gate by hand.

How do I know the gate is light enough?

Move the leaf by hand with the motor disconnected. It should swing freely with little effort, and it should not drag or stick at any point.

What To Do Next

Measure each leaf, note its weight and check the room behind the gate. Then compare those numbers with a model’s stated limits and keep a margin.
